Guidelines
- After the schedule is prepared, the person in-charge of each item MUST deliver, by
Monday, September 12, 2011, a cd to Rashmi Verma with item name, item time, and contact person name written on it. Failure to deliver the cd may result in the cancellation of the item. Do not forget to bring a copy of the same cd with you on the day of performance.
- Each cd should have only one item. Multiple tracks on one cd create confusion and delay.
- Please do not deliver any MP3 cd.
- It is the responsibility of the performer(s) to collect the cd(s) after the performance.
- On the day of performance, all team leaders/choreographers/performers ARE REQUIRED to report one hour before their scheduled time to the cultural program control desk near the stage.

| Max Katz is Assistant Professor of Music at the College of William and Mary where he teaches Music of India, World Music, and Indian Music Ensemble. Dr. Katz pursued intensive study of Hindi and Urdu languages, and has training in Hindustani music with several renowned performing artists of India. Currently he is learning the sitar from Ustad Irfan Khan, Khalifa of the Lucknow Gharana of sitar and sarod. |
Fred Nortes has been involved in Indian Arts since 1998. Tabla was his very first contact with music. Since 2008, he is pursuing his study of Tabla with Shri Amit Chatterjee from Calcutta. He is taking on a cursus in Tabla , at the PRACHEEN KALA KENDRA Institute (Chandigarh) |
Miss India of Hampton Roads Contest
Arbonne Cosmetics has agreed to sponsor Miss India–Hampton Roads Contest. Their make-up consultants will provide make-up application to all contestants on the day of the event.
Cache is sponsoring Miss India - Hampton Roads Contest; they will loan formal wear for the contest, exclusively to eligible contestants.

Introductory Round: All Contestants will be given an opportunity to introduce themselves on stage, wearing evening gowns/prom dresses, which express a sense of their style and appropriateness. Each contestant will be asked one general knowledge question. Ten semi-finalists will then be announced. These semi-finalists will be given 10 minutes to prepare themselves for the talent round of the competition.
Talent Round: Talent is anything that can be performed on stage, ex. singing, dancing, instrumentalists, miming, magic tricks, etc… The talent must be family friendly. Contestants will be given 10-15 minutes to prepare for the Indian Formal Wear round.
Indian Formal Wear Round: Indian Formal Wear should express a sense of their style. Indian Formal Wear includes, but is not limited to, the Saree, Salwar Kameez, or Lehnga.
Interview Round: The Ten semi-finalists will go through a one minute interview round. Five finalists will then be chosen.
Finalists Round: Each of the five finalists must respond to a judge’s question. A second runner up, a first runner up, and Miss India Hampton Roads 2011 will be announced.

Essay Competition
AIHR announces its first Essay Competition- open to our next generation writers’ ages 10-18 years old. The two topics for this year are:
- for ages 10-14: "Going Green – Protection of Environment" - How can you make a difference?
- for ages 15-18: "Role of India in the Global Economy"
Deadlines: The last day for receiving the essays is September 10, 2011 by 11:59 PM (EST). Submissions after this date will be disqualified. Guidelines:
- Essays must be 12-point, double spaced, 1 inch page margins in WORD format
- Essays must have a title within the topic provided
- Essays must be between 300-400 words for category 1 and 600-800 words for category 2
- Sources must be credited in bibliography
- Essays not within these requirements will NOT be considered
- A one paragraph bio of the author, including age and the school they attend must be included at the end of the essay.
Note: This does not count towards number of words in essay.
Winners will be announced around 4 PM on the day of India Fest on September 17, 2011 at Norfolk Scope. Prizes will be awarded at that time. The winning essays will be published in the subsequent issues of newsletter of AIHR.

Art & Drawing Competition
As in the previous events, this year again, AIHR encourages young artists to showcase their creativity in art & drawing at this competition. There are 2 themes this year.
- "Going Green – Planet Earth" for children between the ages of 5–9 years
- "Inspiring India" for children between the ages of 10–15 years & 16–19 years
The art & drawing competition will take place on the day of India Fest 2011 on September 17, 2011 in the main arena of Norfolk Scope. Competition closes at 3:00 pm. There will be First & Second prize awarded for each age group. All material for the drawing competition will be provided by AIHR on the day of the event.
